What makes Szeged's Art Nouveau architecture so special?

After the Great Flood of 1879, Szeged had to be almost entirely rebuilt. The city's reconstruction coincided with the golden age of Art Nouveau, resulting in numerous public buildings and residential houses being designed in this distinctive architectural style. The outcome is an elegant and harmonious city centre that remains one of the finest examples of Hungarian Art Nouveau.

Art Nouveau is characterized by nature-inspired ornamentation, flowing lines, floral motifs, and richly decorated façades. These beautiful details can be discovered throughout the streets of downtown Szeged.

Must-see attractions

  • Reök Palace

Without a doubt, Reök Palace is Szeged's most famous Art Nouveau building. Designed by Ede Magyar and completed in 1907, it is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture.

Its undulating façade, water lily-inspired decorations, and elegant wrought-iron balconies make the building well worth a visit in its own right. Today, Reök Palace hosts contemporary art exhibitions.

  • Gróf Palace

Located on Tisza Lajos Boulevard, Gróf Palace is another remarkable work by Ede Magyar. With its rich floral motifs, colourful ceramic decorations, and distinctive façade, it is one of the city's most beautiful residential buildings.

  • Deutsch Palace

Situated near Kárász Street, Deutsch Palace is a lesser-known yet outstanding example of Szeged's Art Nouveau heritage, admired for its refined decorative details and elegant proportions.

  • New Synagogue

Although its architecture combines several different styles, the New Synagogue is another unmissable landmark. Regarded as one of the most beautiful synagogues in Europe, its magnificent interior features stunning stained-glass windows, decorative paintings, and an impressive central dome.

Saint Stephen Square Water Tower

Saint Stephen Square Water Tower

The Saint Stephen Square Water Tower is not only one of Szeged's best-known engineering landmarks but also one of the city's most unique attractions. Rising above the city centre for more than 120 years, it still serves its original purpose as part of Szeged's water supply system. It is also open to visitors on selected occasions, offering a truly memorable sightseeing experience.

A remarkable achievement of Hungarian engineering

The water tower was built in 1904 based on the designs of Szilárd Zielinski. Its greatest distinction is that it was Hungary's first reinforced concrete water tower, representing a remarkable engineering achievement for its time. The structure proved so successful that it served as a model for the design of many other water towers for decades.

The tower's exterior is made particularly distinctive by its Art Nouveau façade, designed by Flóris Korb, making it an outstanding landmark not only from an industrial heritage perspective but also for its architectural significance.
